Open for Business

Basic information about open source options and strategy for business and civic leaders. Learn what open source is, why it matters, and how you can capitalize on it.

"Open for Business" workshops introduce business owners, executives, civic leaders, and decision-makers to open source software as a strategic option. The session walks through how open source compares to proprietary software on cost, lock-in, governance, and long-term sustainability — and where each model has advantages.

Topics covered: the difference between "free as in beer" and "free as in freedom," how open source licenses actually work, how to evaluate an open source project for business use, the difference between using and contributing back, vendor relationships in the open source world, and how Chattanooga.Digital fits into a community-led open source strategy.
